New construction projects often come to me with the overall floor plan already established. By then, the kitchen usually exists as a well-intentioned floor plan — but floor plans don't cook dinner. My role is to discover the implications of those early decisions and develop the layout into a kitchen that supports everyday life.

This kitchen's footprint was large, but much of it was for entertaining. With no upper cabinets and a cooking alcove, the prep and cooking zone had relatively little storage.

The cooking alcove, fridge, freezer, double ovens, and large windows were all important. But there wasn't enough wall space for them all. So I moved the double ovens to the pantry.

At the time, a wall was planned to divide the kitchen and pantry. When that wall was later removed, I wasn't sure whether the ovens would become an unwelcomed focal point. Visually, the result was a happy accident.

Logistically, moving the ovens added to an already busy passage. We had to examine everything planned for the pantry — the bar, the coffee area, the ovens, and food storage — and think carefully about when, who, and how each area would be used so we weren't creating a train wreck.

The client wanted two islands — one for meal prep and one for Sunday potluck brunch with numerous crockpots.

The islands needed both distinction and cohesion. The serving island is a bustling place, so its aesthetic was kept clean and simple (with ample outlets for crockpots), while the prep island received a subtle biophilic pattern on each end and sleeker outlets.

That biophilic language continues in the backsplash tile, tying the room together without competing for attention.

Good kitchen design often isn't about one dramatic decision. It's the accumulation of dozens of thoughtful ones. Individually they may seem insignificant. Together they create a kitchen that works, day after day, exactly the way it should.
