Eclectic kitchen in Pownal, Maine

This is the story of my kitchen.

My husband — as simple and frugal as one can be without being Amish — is our chef. He's a mini-homesteader.

We have chickens, peach, plum, and apple trees, and an extensive garden. Food is a Big Deal.

When we decided to replace our 1991 kitchen, my husband (also our installer) had one design rule: don't alter the systems or structure.

Following the rule was easy. The layout worked. The opportunity came from modern equipment: a workstation sink, an induction cooktop, and a steam oven.

I've written about workstation sinks for Fine Homebuilding because I believe they're one of the rare innovations that genuinely improve the cooking experience. They create extra workspace, simplify cleanup, and make a modest kitchen work much harder.

From a practical standpoint, my favorite feature is the cabinetry and countertops made from a recycled paper and resin material. It's durable, repairable, and impervious to water.

If that were the whole story, we'd have a wonderfully practical kitchen.

But I wanted more.

I wanted a playful, quirky space that felt connected to nature, to people, and to its surroundings.

That led to choices like a substantial wood shelf and a glass backsplash with the same contour as the arched doorway in the space. I painted the area behind the glass the same green as the landscape beyond the windows.

I selected tile by ceramic artist Toni Darling Frank at the sink, handmade tile by Fireclay Tile underfoot, and a handcrafted cutting board by Siders Woodcrafting for the workstation sink.

This kitchen reflects the way my husband and I choose to live. It isn't about perfection. It's about creating a home that brings joy and meaning into our everyday experience.
