The clients have an antique home in the heart of downtown Portland. At the time I met them, they had one young child and one on the way.

I connected with them immediately. Everybody does. They are Good People.

The kitchen was divided into two halves by a door to the backyard.

That door jammed all the kitchen functionality into a small L-layout, leaving no room for a dishwasher while the other half of the room had little to do.

The goal: make better use of the space, enhance the cooking experience, and update the look/materials.

The response:

• Moved the door to the backyard to make more space for the kitchen

• Added a large bank of windows to capture the beautiful light and views (hard to come by in a dense urban neighborhood)

• Expanded the doorway to the dining room

• Constructed a functional cooking layout

• Added a hang out space

The renovation transformed a cramped, inward-looking kitchen into the social heart of the home.

Fun fact: The client texted me about a year after the project wrapped saying,

“Hanging out in our kitchen nook feeding my baby who I was pregnant with when we worked with you and feeling so grateful!”‍
